* Nice antique original tintype photo * Features a middle aged woman wearing Civil War era dress * "MELAINOTYPE PLATE FOR NEFF'S PAT 19 FEB 56." embossed into the plate at bottom * The first American tintypes were patented by Peter Neff, Jr. in Feb., 1856. He called it a Melainotype. They were on a heavier, thicker metal than the later tintypes, and of a finer quality. A rival of Neff's, Victor Griswold, patented a similar process in Oct., 1856, which he called a Ferrotype.
